A Ringside To Every Fighter

Fight Life

Kids...

Almost all of us have a reason to enter into this fighting world, irrespective of the fight form. Your Dad would have been a good fighter, or you would have started taking up classes just because you got bullied by some bum or kid, you would have even got inspired watching ROCKY BALBOA. I hope you guys haven't forgot this...

"Fighting.. its like 90% from the skull and 10% from the body."

Believe it or not, that line wasn't just a film dialogue. Its so important that every fighter gets this into his mind. Your size doesn't matter because all that matter's for a fighter is his heart.!

For instance, i am a fighter. A light-weight fighter. All i know is fighting and only that. It all starts with which glove you choose. i would like to let you know about different glove brands upon my personal experience.

Firstly, you got to know what are the different kinds of glove available :

  • Bag Gloves– Most of these look small, lean, and trim. The more expensive ones look like regular boxing gloves. In my opinion, ignore them, they are a waste of time and money. They are designed to protect your knuckles while you deliver hard punches to the punching bag and serve to accustom your knuckles to harder impact. Another thing to note is that some bag gloves are really stiff and don’t form well to a curved fist.
  • Training Gloves – These are all-purpose gloves. Some of them are not thick enough for sparring. Figure out what boxing gloves to use based upon your priority.
  • Sparring Gloves – These are general use gloves. I highly recommend everyone to buy a pair of these before anything. They are made with extra cushion to protect your hand as well as cushion the blows to your opponent. You can use these gloves for all-purpose boxing. It’s important to note that sparring gloves should be at least 14-16 ounces especially if you weigh anything over 130 pounds.
  • Pro or Fight Gloves – Fight gloves are smaller and more compact to deliver more damage to your opponent. They are not recommended for anything other than real competition.

How to choose yourself a Color :

Does the color of your boxing gloves matter? YES! Although red is the classic color, it is less visible to the human eye than other colors in the spectrum. If you’re sparring against someone, it’s preferred that they wear gloves of a color that you can see. Don’t forget that wearing light colored gloves can also help your trainer catch your punches better. I’ve trained at night a lot so I love to buy blue, green, and white colored gloves. I still have a pair of red ones just because red is the classic boxing color. Another knock on red gloves is that sometimes you can’t see the build up of blood stains on the gloves. I know this is a bit morbid but I’d like to know if a pair of gloves have been bled on.

What are the different types of glove available :

Lace-up type offer more comfort if you like your glove to fit snug around your wrist. For some fighters, it’s just a habit to have lace-up gloves. Hook & Loop gloves are made to be convenient and can be just as supportive. Most people will prefer the hook & loop gloves because they can put them on themselves. The bad parts about hook & loop in my opinion are that the elastic velcro hooks can tear into your cotto hand wraps and shred them. It’s not a big deal but it’s happened to me before and really annoyed the hell out of me. Lace-up gloves are actually not that hard to deal with. They might be considered even more convenient than hook & loop gloves if you have skinny wrists – since all you have to do is tie the laces just once and then slip your hands in and out every time before use.
Another great thing about lace-up gloves is that it allows you to walk around the gym and ask people to tie your gloves and meet the pros, trainers, and other fighters in your gym.

Review's of various glove brands :

Fighting - This is Titleboxing’s “premium” brand. The cushion and padding are great but the wrist areas can feel a little skimpy. I have the hook & loop version and the velcro feels very cheap. Nonetheless, they feel like a great quality glove and cost considerably less than the other premium brands.
Everlast - One of the most popular name in the sport of boxing. I don’t know why this company has a toy division but many of their products are over-priced and poorly made. Their gear becomes higher quality only when you buy the higher-end pro-grade stuff. You basically don’t see any real boxing gloves from Everlast until you pay about $70 or more. Everything from $65 and down feels too stiff, too much like a toy, or just not anatomically comfortable for the hand.
Grant - Awesome gloves with protection all over. They’re very well padded and used in a lot of professional fights. There is a lot of padding around the wrist area which is great defensive fighters or guys that take punches on their wrist a lot (peek-a-boo style, high guard, etc). Excellent quality.

TKO - Imitation pro gloves. Their gloves might look thick and feel good at first but they’ll quickly break down and stiffen which gives you less protection over time. Avoid these wannabe-pro gloves like the plague!

Reyes (Cleto Reyes) - believe the hype. These gloves are made to be more compact at the fist to aid the puncher. It’s important to note that these gloves are made for FIGHTING, definitely NOT SPARRING. The gloves punch harder because they have less protective cushion so it’s important to protect your hands as much as possible in training. They are also very high quality and last forever if you can get the authentic mexican-made ones (there are hidden links on the internet). Again, I do not recommend these gloves for training, especially on the heavy bag.

Ringside - They're very nice and super high quality at a higher cost. These gloves will last forever! They feel great and will look new even though they are 3-4 years old. The inside and outside of the glove stays perfectly intact. Stitching stays together, the cushion still thick. It’s really great quality. Everyone who’s owned a pair of ringside can attest to this. Another 10 out of 10 brand.

PRO (Pro Boxing Equipment)- This is a company that is located in Southern California in the LA area. Their punching gloves are crap. I’ve tried even their professional ones before and they go flat within months of heavy use. Avoid them no matter how much their salesperson discounts the price.

There you go kid's, this is the basics for all beginners. As you get old, not by age, but by fight's you'll find a perfect pair for your fists.

My First Fight

Every Fighter's greatest battle is his first fight. No matter what kind of fight it may be, No matter what kind of practice you have had, No matter who's your coach, No matter nothing..
Every great champion is decided by his very first fight.

Win It or Lose It.! It doesn't matter. What matters the most is Fighting The Good Fight.

My first fight

You would have started your fighting carrier just a few months ago. You must be lucky enough, to fight so early, but be sure that you have really had enough training. Don't ask your mind.! It Lies. Ask your Heart, It always has the real Answers. Once you train hard enough, your coach will let you know about the rules and all the complex stuff. Your coach will do say a lot of things you have to do, But he wont be saying you a few things that you will do. Know what's that? No ? Well, that's Fear.

You will eventually get afraid as the day of the fight gets closer and closer.
Well, that's no Bad.
I don't think i need to remind you all this famous saying.,

" FEAR.! It's a fighters best friend.
If You learn how to control it.. It'll make you Hot and bring you victory.
But, If you let fear control You.. It'll burn you as well as people around you. "

Kid's there nothing wrong to have fear. But, too much of it and you'll become a target practice for your opponent.

To overcome this the below are some steps you got to follow :

  • Train, Train, Train, Train and Keep Training.! You don't train for others, but for you. Because, when you train for others, you pretend to train. It's of no damn use. You can cheat anybody, but not Yourself. Suffer the Pain of Training, if you don't wanna suffer the Pain of Defeat !
  • Pick Up a Good friend in your Fight club or gym, to be your sparring partner. Sparring has to be done only when you have got all the basics right and half-a-month before your fight. The main objective of sparring is to practice the skills and techniques. You only learn from mistakes, and you can't afford mistakes in your real fight. One wrong move and everything will be done, before you even understand what had happened. Knowing is not enough, you must apply. Once you grow into a professional, you will understand how true the words are.
  • Have a perfect pair of glove for your fists. Keep them special and Never use it for sparring.! I       don't mean you have to keep it new till the final day, What i trying to say is not to use it for punching    the bag and sparring. Be wise in choosing your glove. Once, you become a professional, you'll find a perfect pair for your fist's. Until then, either listen to your coach, or read the previous blog post (Use the below link to read the post) on How to choose A Boxing Glove.
Refer this link : How to Choose a Boxing Glove

  • As a fighter, you need all kinds of protein and vitamin's.so, Consume Nutritious Food. Milk, Soya milk shake, Egg, Fish, Chicken, Meat, and whatever natural food you like must constitute your daily diet. Avoid eating fried foods and stuffs containing too much fat. Things that don't taste so good, gives just what your body just needs. What you eat has direct effect on your body. And for a fighter, Body needs to be at your service at all times.
  • The most important thing about fighting is, You don't always just Hit, You also get Hit. Unless you're Chuck Norris and you know how to slip the jab as good as him, you must condition your body to take the Hit. You have to withstand all the hits, take the pain and survive. Only then you have a shot at winning. Most fighters concentrate on conditioning from the very beginning before even working on their jabs. Trust me, that's a wise decision.
  • Last, but not the least, Do Not Take Any Form Of Drugs to Enhance Your abilities. This is never going to help you. And that's not the way of a True Warrior. And also, i need not remind you the consequences you'll be facing, how much humiliation you will have to undergo once you get caught. The worst part is, you will be banned from the sport. The Life which you have lived for all those days, will no longer be yours. Nobody would never , ever want that.
  • Sleep ! Have enough sleep each and every night. What many of us don't realize is that, our mind does more and more training, by processing all that we have learned during the day, while we sleep. So, sleep well, and you do yourself more good.

Once you follow the above steps and do it in your way. You will be ready for the big day of your life, Your First fight.

A personal advice from me is that. its not bad to have a Lucky something with you for every fight, like a cuff link or something. Every fighter has something like this. Its clearly, not about luck. Its just about the driving potential it has on you.

On the day of fight, try to be as calm as possible. Engage in spiritual prayers. Just remember that, if your opponent is also a debutant like you, then, you know that you have followed all the above instructions, and he hasn't. You surely do have an upper hand because, your opponent must be tensed and must be fearing about the fight. But, your not.!

If your facing an opponent who has already a couple of fight experiences, just remember that, this is your first bout, he knows nothing about your style, strengths, attributes, weaknesses. But, you'll get some information on him, he'll take some time to figure you out. This is a strength and you can dominate him, if you clearly understand what your going to do.

Never play the game as it comes, it means you are going in your opponents plan. Fix a plan and execute it, make him fall in your plan. Of course, Fighting is 90% from the Skull and 10% from the Body. Just do the basics right and when you get the right time, just pound on him. Unleash the beast in you. No cheap shots, just follow the rules. Never give up in a fight. There nothing more humiliating for a fighter. But, you know the limits. In extreme situations, you have to tap out.

Every time you go to the ringside, forget all the shits that goes through your mind, and listen to your mind. It may sound easy, but that's the hardest thing to do. Give the mind to your coach and converse with him. He might say something simple, but that would be the key to change the fight. Do Follow It. Exchange good word's like if you do well in a round, say "I'm doing better than i thought" or if you didn't do well, say "I'll get him in the next round"

Once you hear the final bell, just get this in have fought into your mind, "You have fought a Good Fight". The Rest is left to the decision of officials. Win or Lose, you have fought the good fight and You're going out the way you got to go Out ! Don't forget to appreciate your opponent. and also his coaches and the match referee. Come out of the ring as a Good Fighter.

This must be your My First Fight.

Thanks for reading.
I appreciate it.

How To Choose A Boxing Glove

Once you become a Professional.. you'll learn and find the Perfect Pair for your fists..... well, until then
you may need some  expert advice.

Are all gloves the same?

Not all punching gloves are made for real hardcore boxing. As you and me, not all are same.. everybody are different, aren't we?. The brands which I don't recommend are the ones very easily accessible and seen in all sporting markets like Big 5 Sports, pro sports, and Sports Authority. Worst punching gloves are the Everlast ones that look like the classic but they aren't worth the money you spend on them. Try not to buy some of these, because, i hope you already knew the greatest possession of every boxer is his fists. Hurting them would be the last thing you would ever want to do.

Does costly gloves work better?

Kids, not all things you shell out money on, is always good. You wouldn't forget that the food you had on the streets, are way better than the one's you eat at top hotels. But, there is also a fact that, "You get the result for, how much you pay", and that's true. A 30 dollar priced glove from an average brand, will be way better than a glove double the price from a well established brand. Try to use common sense, and for the first purchase, you have to be very careful. I would prefer you go to a store and purchase, instead of purchasing online for the very first time.

Is there only one type of glove?

  • Bag Gloves – As the name suggests, these are perfectly made to hit the bag. They are small, lean, trim and perfectly crafted for punching hard. Well, of course, their appearance is never important to us. These gloves are designed with essential padding, so that you don't hurt your knuckles. This is the main reason why we use a separate glove for hitting the bag.
  • Training Gloves – Training gloves are simply used for sparring, practicing moves and
everything you do in your gym or dojo other than hitting the bag. If you cant afford different gloves, this one's just for you. It's an all rounder.
  • Sparring Gloves – Like training gloves, i suggest you have a separate pair of gloves for sparring because, you don't want to injure yourself during sparring. do you? The only thing each and every coach says during a sparring session is  "Take it easy kid! This is just a sparring session". Those words are absolutely true. These gloves are designed in such a way that, you don't get yourself hurt nor your opponent, while sparring.
  • Professional Gloves –These are supposed to be your special and lucky one's as they'll only be used for the real big things. You treat these gloves with respect. These are designed in such a way that, it hurts your opponent well and at the same time, to protect you by taking some hard shots.

Is color an important factor?

The answer is, yes. Red is  supposed to be the classic color of boxing. But, you cant see it coming. The fact is light colors can be easily seen, and they help coaches identify your punches easily. If you're your training under dark conditions, these are the colors i would suggest : White, Blue, Yellow or any of these combinations. Another factor is that, these colors show the damage you've made by highlighting the blood stains.

Coming to the big point. the below are the brands you should buy and the brands you must leave alone.

To Buy:

1.Grant .
2.Reyes (Cleto Reyes)
3.Rivals
4.Ringside
5.Winning

Not to Buy:

1.Century
2.TKO
3.Everlast
4.PRO (ProBoxingEquip)

An Inspiration To Every Fighter Out There...

This is one of the best movie speeches ever and a talk we all need from time to time. The text of the talk is below the video.

The Rocky Balboa Speech in " ROCKY BALBOA "

“You ain’t gonna believe this, but you used to fit right here. (He gestures to the palm of his hand). I’d hold you up to say to your mother, ‘This kid’s gonna be the best kid in the world. This kid’s gonna be somebody better than anybody I ever knew.’ And you grew up good and wonderful. It was great just watchin’ you, every day was like a privilege. Then the time come for you to be your own man and take on the world, and you did. But somewhere along the line, you changed. You stopped being you. You let people stick a finger in your face and tell you you’re no good. And when things got hard, you started lookin’ for something to blame, like a big shadow.
Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place, and I don’t care how tough you are, it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard you hit, it’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done!
Now if you know what you’re worth, then go out and get what you’re worth! But you gotta be willing to take the hits. And not pointing fingers saying you ain’t where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody! Cowards do that and that ain’t you! You’re better than that!
I’m always gonna love you no matter what. No matter what happens. You’re my son and you’re my blood. You’re the best thing in my life. But until you start believing in yourself, you ain’t gonna have a life.

This is one hell of a speech...
for every fighter out there... ROCKY is an Inspiration.!
